Beccles Station Platform Reinstatement
Civil engineering design for the reinstatement of the redundant second platform at Beccles Station, enabling an hourly passenger service between Lowestoft and Ipswich.
Overview
GSB provided civil engineering design support for the reinstatement of the redundant second platform at Beccles Station to support the introduction of an hourly passenger service between Lowestoft and Ipswich. The scheme formed part of wider rail infrastructure upgrades, including a new loop track arrangement to increase operational capacity. Works included platform reinstatement, accessibility improvements, lighting, drainage, customer information systems, and associated station enhancements.
Challenge
The project involved upgrading an existing operational station while integrating new infrastructure with existing assets and structures. Key challenges included modifying the redundant platform to suit revised track geometry; delivering DDA-compliant access, surfacing and pedestrian routes; coordinating civil, structural, electrical and rail systems interfaces; integrating drainage, lighting, CIS equipment and cable routes within a constrained environment; and undertaking remedial works to the existing footbridge plus improvements to public access lighting.
Civil engineering scope
GSB delivered coordinated GRIP 5 civil engineering designs including platform copers adjustments, tactile paving and resurfacing works; DDA-compliant access ramps; foundations for shelters, lighting, CIS equipment and distribution cabinets; and drainage, cable containment routes, fencing, signage and hardstanding works. Close coordination with multidisciplinary teams ensured efficient integration with the wider station and track works.
